What Happens During a Full Car Service?

Many drivers aren't sure what a full service actually involves. We break down exactly what gets checked, changed, and inspected.

A full service is one of the most thorough health checks you can give your vehicle, yet many drivers aren't quite sure what's actually included. Here's a breakdown of what happens during a full car service at Jamie's Auto Care.

Engine oil and filter change is the cornerstone of any service. Fresh oil lubricates the engine's moving parts, reduces friction, and helps prevent premature wear. The old filter is replaced at the same time to ensure the new oil stays clean.

Air filter replacement keeps the engine breathing properly. A blocked air filter restricts airflow, reducing performance and fuel efficiency. Replacing it is a simple but important job.

Spark plug inspection or replacement ensures reliable ignition. Worn spark plugs cause misfires, poor fuel economy, and hard starting. On a full service, plugs are either inspected and tested or replaced depending on mileage and condition.

Brake inspection covers pad thickness, disc condition, and calliper operation. Brake fluid level and condition are also checked — brake fluid absorbs moisture over time and should be replaced every two years regardless of mileage.

Tyre check includes tread depth, tyre pressure, and visual inspection for damage or uneven wear. Tyre condition directly affects safety, handling, and fuel economy.

Fluid top-ups include coolant, power steering fluid (where applicable), windscreen washer fluid, and brake fluid. Keeping fluids at the correct level prevents breakdowns and component damage.

Lights check ensures all headlights, indicators, brake lights, and fog lights are functioning correctly. A faulty light is an MOT failure and a road safety issue.

Battery test using a digital tester checks the battery's health and charging state. Batteries tend to fail without warning, so testing regularly is worthwhile — especially before winter.

At the end of the service, you'll receive a clear summary of what was done and anything that may need attention in the near future.
